How to Save Money on Your Next Move

With moving comes some expenses that you may never expect. However, if you consider these steps, it may make your move that much easier. Here are some tips on how to save money on your next move:

First and foremost, calculate your moving costs

The first step is to calculate your estimated moving costs. This will help you understand your expenses and lead you into your overall goal of saving money on your moving expenses. You must know your expenses before you can save money on them. Include expenses like labor, truck rental fees, moving supplies, fuel and oil, and any special packaging for the transportation of fragile items.

Second, skimming your moving expenses

Now that the expenses have been calculated you can now begin to reduce them. If you’re planning to use a moving company, call at least five companies to pick the cheapest rate. You may find that the range of prices from company to company is large. Consider booking your moving company 6 – 8 weeks in advance. That way you will be able to negotiate pricing and get everything packed properly before the movers arrive. Hiring movers at the last minute may cause you to pay premium prices. Summer is the most popular season for moving, due to the increased demand of movers the price for movers increases. Therefore, if possible move during spring or fall. Also, consider moving on a week day, rates for weekdays are often cheaper than weekend rates. Lastly, ask the movers if you can pack and they just drive  your items, this will save on labor expenses.  Recruit friends and family, you could still save money even after you buy them lunch or if you decide to move yourself, pack your vehicle efficiently to save valuable time and trips back and forth

Reduce costs on moving supplies

Order more affordable packaging online or ask a friend. You can also purchase bulk packaging supplies at a large wholesaler or discount store. Borrow a tape dispenser instead of buying one, use crumpled newspaper in replacement of bubble wrap, and use your own linens for extra padding instead of borrowing from the movers. If you are moving for a new job talk to your company about reimbursement for all or part of your moving expenses.
